Only Mother Could Love: Sasquatch versus Sasquatch...

Now that the trusty YouAreComic blog is back to our semi-regular schedule it's about time for the return of our patented 'Only A Mother Could Love' posts featuring comics/characters that get no love.

Last time we got our O.M.C.L. on I was talking about Alpha Flight, and specifically an issue focused on my favorite Alphan and resident midget hairball Puck (I also talked about nuns, nymphomaniacs and superhero skirt slits - which led to this apology...then this apology for the apology. But don't worry my intrepid female readers I promise that I've since learned my lesson). So today I'm going to continue gushing about those four-colour diamonds in the rough...Alpha Flight.

This time it's Alpha Flight #23. Why that issue I hear you ask. Well because this issue gives me an excuse to ramble for a bunch of paragraphs about a dude who accidentally turned himself into giant fuzzy yeti while trying to be the next Bruce Banner and a chick who's half mountie half Canadian demi-goddess.

That's right folks, you may have thought a hairy midget grandpa possessed by a giant, black, Arabian ghost that gives him cramps was cool - but he's got nothing on Sasquatch and Snowbird.

This issue opens like any normal Alpha Flight issue. Some soap opera drama, Puck getting beat up by a girl, Snowbird having a snooze...nothing special. That is until cheesy villain of the month 'Caliber' shows up and starts shooting up downtown Vancouver.

Now let's be honest. Caliber...is not a good villain. He milks what face-time he gets here for all he's worth. He blows some stuff up, spouts some bad super-villain dialogue and generally comes off as a bit of a tool. Then some Alphans show up to put the kibosh on his fun and games.

Things begin to get interesting when the 'kibsoh putting' doesn't go as planned and poor Sasquatch ends up getting shot in the right nipple:

Damn, That Guy's Purple Nurples Are Hardcore!

Sans nipple and understandably upset by it's loss Sasquatch quickly wraps up the whole 'walking-tank-rampage' thing with a well placed punch in the mush. Caliber goes down, peace is restored, evil is punished....job's a good 'un.

Things take a turn for the awesome just a moment later when the Alpha victory celebrations are crashed by a fighting mad Snowbird. She swoops in, turns into a giant artic owl and brutally attacks poor old Quatchie!

Arrggh! My Other Nipple!

With his last remaining nipple gone Sasquatch kinda loses the plot. He attempts to strangle his smoking hot, mentally ill girlfriend Aurora with her stylish scarf and uses skirt-slit sporting chica badass Talisman's own magical mojo against her.

As it turns out,Snowbird's owl-based nipplectomy was not the unprovoked attack it appeared. It seems that when Sasquatch science-geek alter-ego Walter Langowski botched his attempt to duplicate Bruce Banner's Hulk-inducing accident he didn't actually turn himself into a giant fuzzy teddy bear as we all first thought. He in fact weakened the dimensional walls enough to let through Tamaraq, one of the mythical Great Beasts (The Northern God's version of the Greek Pantheon's Titans). Put simply Walter blew a hole in reality and got himself possessed by a giant Canadian Monster God! That boys and girls...is an origin story.

Being how the rest of the team are down and how it doesn't seem fair to make the guy with hairy midget powers fight the extra-dimensional Yeti - it's down to Snowbird to take Tamaraq down. Luckily her Great Northern demi-goddess shape-shifting powers provide her with the perfect solution:

Holy Cow, It's the Albino-ible Snow-man

That's right folks the only way to fight a humungous, megalomaniacal other-worldy Yeti is with a humungous, megalomaniacal other-worldy Yeti.

This issue's awesome-quotient now rockets right off the scale as we're treated to a killer Sasquatch on Albino-Quatch throwdown. Feast your eyes:

Fortunately for the poor citizens of Vancouver these guys are Canadian super-heroes. Unlike their pansy American counterparts these guys all have a little touch of the Wolverines about them. So there's no angsting or bleeding heart 'there's got to be another way' talk.

If you're a giant albino Yeti and you want to stop a giant orange Yeti from wrecking up your city the solution is obvious. You just rip that dimension-hopping punk's heart out with your fuzzy bare hands:

The issue ends with a remorseless Snowbird vowing to hop the dimensional barriers and venture into the Kingdom of the Great Beasts where there will be yet more ass-kicking and heart-ripping. I tell you, those mounties are badass.

Incidentally this isn't the last we see of poor old Walter. He comes back from the dead like all good comic characters do. Of course sometimes he comes as a robot...then other times as a woman...but hey, back is back.

After hearing all this I can understand your confusion as to why no-one read the classic Alpha Flight series back in it's 80s heyday. I mean you weren't getting nearly as many Canadian Monster Gods over in the pages of Spider-man. What were you 80s comic fans thinking?

Anyway I know you're all pulling on your coats to pop out to your local comic-book store and pick up this issue from a 25$ bargain bin so I'll sign off here. But hey, come back in a few weeks time when 'Only A Mother Could Love' will be presenting an epic battle like no other 'Alpha Flight versus Deadly Ernest'...

......no, I'm not kidding, Deadly Ernest really is his name.

Be there or be a Canadian Albino Monster God.

Finally The Answer To The Mystery...

I was innocently reading some classic 60s Green Lantern stuff minding my own business when I stumbled across the answer to that age old mystery...what really killed the dinosaurs?

Who would've guessed that it was bad government!
All Those In Favour Of Increasing The Snazzy Headband Budget Say Aye

Damn those Pterodactyl bureaucrats and their bitchin' 80s fashion! No wonder they never get anything done.

(Today's prehistoric politics was brought to you by the good people at Green Lantern v2 #30 wherein the back-up strip Hal Jordan tricks fellow Green Lantern Katma Tui into dumping her fiance using a power-ring generated Emotion-Meter and a giant, fighting amoeba. Aren't you glad that guy's not your marriage councillor?)

Shake It Like A Polaroid Pygture...

I totally agree with Adam West, It's a damn shame that Batman doesn't dance anymore.

These days it's all left to the newest additions to Batman's Rogue's Gallery like Professor Pyg to get their old softshoe on:
If You Liked It Then You Shoulda Put a Pyg On It

Drop It Like It's Hot

I Can Have It All and I'm Dancing For My Life!

Nobody puts Pyggy In The Corner.

(Today's Johnny Castle-esque bumpin' & grindin' was brought to you by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's deeply creepy Batman & Robin #3 which features a dude who likes to melt fright masks onto the faces of his victims. Which seems gross until we meet the dude who likes to eat people's faces a few issues later. What is with those guys and faces?)

It's A Dog's Life...

Recently DC kicked off a new series called Adventure Comics that for the first few issues gave us back something we'd been missing since the heady days of the 90s. You remember the 90s don't you - those were some glory days for comics. Supermen died and came back with mullets, Green Lanterns were storing girlfriend parts in their fridges and a young whippersnapper named Spawn was duking it out with a foul-mouthed clown from hell month in and month out.

When I cracked open that first issue of Adventure comics I was transported back to those days as I stared in disbelief at a comic that starred Superboy!

Now when I say 'starred' I'm not talking a Teen Titans style supporting character role. I'm talking Conner 'Superboy' Kent front and centre in all his wall of reality punching glory!

Granted things have changed for Conner over the years. No longer is he bopping about Hawaii looking for trouble with news-reporting sex kitten Tana Moon. Nor is he sporting that horrendous 90210 haircut or that bitchin' leather jacket.

In fact in these issues of Adventure Comics he's taking things kind of slow and mellow. Hanging out at the Kent's farm in Smallville, going to school, going on dates with fellow Teen Titan and advocate of the 'jeans-as-acceptable-superhero-attire' look Cassie 'Wondergirl' Sandsmark.

In fact in this particular issue he spends most of his time angsting it up with his best bud Tim 'Robin/Red Robin' Drake:

Despite the complete lack of reality-punching these little character sequence are really enjoyable. I don't think Conner or Tim have had characterisation as good as this in a good long while. We get to see them renew their friendship talking about how it's no fun being 50% alien boy scout 50% bald megalomaniac or being the only one who believes your surrogate dad is bouncing around time dressed as a pirate. It's like watching a good episode of classic grunge teen-drama 'My So Called Life' only with batarangs and without that creepy mop-headed next door neighbour kid.

While all this touchy-feely bonding is good stuff we here at YouAreComic know that our loyal fans demand at least a little butt-kickery in their comic-books. Sadly with Conner trying to be a normal teenager he's a bit too busy 'finding himself' to engage in any proper super-heroic action.

Luckily this book comes with a familiar co-star who supplies all the butt-kickery even the most rabid YouAreComic action junkie could possibly want...and this co-star comes with a cape:

That's right folks Adventure Comics #3 gives you Krypto the Super-Dog kicking ass and taking names. While Conner's getting his emo on, his loyal, fuzzy pal is rounding up costumed bad guys and crazy 'mother-box' stealing wackos in effort to get his surly new master to give him a damn treat or at least a quick scratch behind the ears....

...and what does he get for his trouble?

Damn Kents. This new one is a dick just like that other one.

If I was Krypto I'd go hang out with Ace the Bat-Dog. All he does is slouch around the batcave peeing against the wheel of the batmobile and scratching himself on the giant coin...and he got a staring role in that Batman Of the Future cartoon.

Don't Worry Milhouse...

...even a fearless, iron-willed, cosmically-powered superjock armed with a supremely powerful power ring can fall victim to superior bullying abilities of that nefarious arch-fiend Nelson Muntz.

Better hand over that lunch money GL:

HA! HA!

YouAreComic In Print Yet Again...

Just when you thought it was safe to go into your comic-shop the next installment of the YouAreComic print-media assault is unleashed on an unsuspecting public.

FUTUREQUAKE #16 features a 5 page strip called 'BOOBIE TRAP' written by yours truly. It stars Santa Claus the Easter Bunny and a couple of tough guys from B.O.O.B.I.E. (that's the Bureua of Occult and Otherworldy Being Integration and Enforcement to you and me). The awesome artwork comes courtesy of art-droid extraordinaire Bruno Stahl with lettering by the ultra-prolific Bolt-01.

Here's a sneaky peek:

That's all from me. I don't want to be holding you back from rushing over to the FutureQuake Store to snap up a copy.

Embarrassing Moments In Super-Villainy #5

Look Mr. Diamondhead I know that having a body made of diamonds, having super-strength, being at the forefront of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and being responsible for badass song titles like 'Am I Evil', 'Shoot Out The Lights' and 'Sucking My Love' can cause an overwhelming sense of superiority and feelings of complete invunerablity to set in...

...but is taking a quick glance over your shoulder when a helpful young man with a bucket on his head asks you to really too much to ask?

Tsk Tsk Tsk, falling for the old 'look behind you...no really' trick. For shame!

Why Lars and James were so influenced by this guy I'll never know.

What do you mean I'm mixing up my Diamondheads. It's such a stupid name how many other Diamondheads can there be?

(Today's moment of comic-book confusion was brought to you by Marv Wolfman's, Sal Buscema's and Tom Palmer's stellar Nova #3 from way back in the misty era of 1976. Also in this issue Diamonhead recounts his formative years running around town dressed as the Red Skull beating up the neighbourhood kids)

Spider-man & Captain America Use The Men's Room...

Okay, so that is undoubtedly one of the lamest covers to a comic-book in the entire history of the medium. Yet behind this awkward looking Captain America dwells one of the most read and re-read comic-books of my childhood. It's a simple done-in-one story starring Spidey and Cap - nothing earth-shattering or spectacular - it's just a simple, standard super-hero story that just so happens to have a single shining 'hell yeah!!' moment that reminds you why comic-books are freaking awesome.

This book has no business being so high on my 'comic-books I love from my childhood' chart. Not only does have that ambominable cover - it also stars my least favorite villain in all of the Marvel universe. Vermin - the rat man. Man, I hate that guy. Spidey-writers seem to always wanna shoe-horn him into all of my favorite story-lines like 'Kraven's Last Hunt' or 'The Child Within'. What is there to like about this guy? All he does is go around moping, eating garbage and rolling his Ss like some kind of bad Thundercats villain.

Mmmm...I'm loving it

Apart from Vermin we've got Spidey and Cap who just happen to be at the same carnival in thier respective secret identities. Peter's moping around thinking about Black Cat and treating forgettable Spidey love-interest Mia like dirt. While Cap is there with current (at the time)beau Bernie Rosenthal wishing he was there with smoking S.H.I.E.L.D. chica and future assassin Sharon Carter. How these jerks continue to get chicks to date them is beyond me.

Anyway luckily for Steve and Pete an angry rat-man shows up with his pack of rats and mangy dogs. So the guys get to ditch their second-string honeys and go to work. Of course going to work in this case means stopping Vermin from stealing a crusty, fresh baguette at the carnival:

Calm Assertive Cap! Calm Assertive! Someone Call The Dog Whisperer!

Then helping him wreck up a local supermarket:

Clean Up In Aisle Three

None of which is the killer 'hell yeah' moment that I mentioned earlier. That moment happens a few moments before the intial Vermin baguette offensive. It takes place in the carnival's suprising pristine men's room...

...sorry I felt a George Michael joke coming on there..it's gone now.

As I was saying despite being in the midst of a dangerous super-villain attack both Pete and Steve unceremoniously ditch their girls and rush to the little super-heroes room. They each duck inside a seperate stall and don their trusty spandex and then...

I Hope They Wash Their Hands

That's the moment. That's awesome. When I was a kid I read and re-read this comic over and over just to re-experience that moment. These were the days when Marvel Team-Up would deliver a big steaming heap of awesome every month! One month you'd have Cap and Spidey getting all 'Avengers Assemble' in the men's room the next month you might have Kraven hotrodding after Spidey atop a stampede of wild animals.

Take note modern Marvel writers. You wanna write a successful super-hero team-up issue? Learn from masters like J.M. DeMatties, Kerry Gammill and Mike Esposito. It's all about men's rooms, mack-daddies and mangy dogs.

Just don't put Vermin in it - I'm sick of that guy!

Nuff Said.

Hear The Drummer Get Wicked...

Since we're celebrating my brother's birthday today I figured maybe a post that combines the mission statement of ourselves, here at YouAreComic, with his one true love...Hip Hop.

What better way to weave two such diverse concepts seamlessly together than by taking a look at Public Enemy:The Comic Book #1:That's right, your eyes do not decieve you. That is in fact a double-page spread of none other than Flavor Flav himself, fly-kicking a bad guy in the chops while slicing him up real nice with a razor-edged clock.

What warped mind could concieve a comic-book where old-school hip-hop superstars Public Enemy are in fact undercover operatives of a badass, secret organisation of globe-trotting, wrong-righting do-gooders? Why only the mind of the Hard Ryhmer himself..Chuck D of course.

He's secretly been a comic-book fan just biding his time in the rap game until he could unleash this upon the world:It's deeply, deeply insane and you should totally buy it.

Consider yourselves warned!

Happy Birthday B-Bro...

Recently this blog has seemed to be nothing but birthday posts, but I can't let my brother's birthday go by without a mention here on YouAreComic. After all it was stealing and reading his Eagles that made me into the fine specimen of a man I am today.

So in celebratory fashion allow me to post his favorite comic-book panel of all time right here for your enjoyment:
Hey B-Boss

Okay, so no-one but those with whom I share DNA is going to get that, but suffice it to say that somewhere in Tallahassee, Florida someone is cackling his ass off.

Happy Birthday bro, hope you have a good one. I send you birthday wishes and..
..a cup of java on the ol' Jawa

(Today's cryptic birthday salutations both come from the fantastic Amazing Spider-man #226. It's a rip-roaring tale of romance, costume parties and laundromats by the dream team of Roger Stern, John Romita Jnr and Jim Mooney. I still have this issue in an old beat-up UK reprint annual that you guessed it...I stole from my brother. One of my favorite Spidey stories ever, so much so that this is the second time I've posted about it)
